‘Lucretii poemata’: A linguagem da política no De Rerum Natura

Rosa, Claudia Beltrão da

In a letter to his brother Quintus (Q. Fr., II, 10), Cicero mentions with praise the combination of ars and ingenium in Lucretius. Today is becoming a commonplace that the De Rerum Natura is a political work. Lucretius addresses the contemporary roman society and suggests a solution for its dilemmas in Epicurean philosophy. We show a brief examination of relations of the political stance of the Lucretius' poetical language and the contemporary political discourses, as we seen specifically in Cicero.

Vieira Neto, Ivan

Iarnblichus of Chalcis was one of the last philosophers to be interested about the routes of the paganism in the IV century, trying to conciliate the mystic principles of the mediterranean religions and the philosophical conceptions of the neoplatonism to arrive it to an equal point that could answer to the yearnings of the society in that time. This enterprise resulted inside his production the understanding of the philosophy as the base for the belief in a spiritual dimension operating and influencing in the human life in all its instances.

O símbolo contra o texto: Pseudo-Dionísio Areopagita e a irrepresentabilidade divina

Marques Samyn, Henrique

According to Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, God remains beyond all possibilities of sensible and conceptual representation. The Creation itself, hierarchly structured, works to establish diverse ways of divine revelation, adapted to the perceptual and cognitive limitations of all creatures, so that they cannot have any immediate knowledge of God. For this reason, the exegetical method employed by Pseudo-Dionysius lies in the acknowledgement of a fundamental gap between symbols applied to God and God itself: only the negation of the symbols makes possible its transcendence and the reaching of a knowledge, although incomplete, of God.

From Manifying to Pegasizing: Ramon Llull’s Theory of Definition Between Arabic and Modern Logic

Fidora Riera, Alexander

The Catalan philosopher and theologian Rarnon Lld (Ramundus Lullus, ca. 1232-1316) is well known for his Ars: a philosophico-theological system which takes the basic concepts of the three monotheistic religions of its time (such as God’s attributes, the virtues and vices, etc.) and combines them in mechanical figures (i.e. rotating circles) in order to convince Muslims (and Jews) of the (logical) superiority of Christianity and, so, to convert them to the Christian faith. One of the peculiarities of Llull’s Ars is its very innovative use of logical devices, the most famous being the quasi-algebraic notation of its principles (each principle being represented by a letter, so that they can easily be combined). Among these innovative achievements stands Llull’s curious theory of definition, which will be presented and discussed in this paper. Our first consideration shall be to give a brief account of the Aristotelian setting and the Arabic reception of Aristotle’s concept of definition (I.); from here we shall proceed to show how Llull’s theory of definition originates from within the context of the Aristotelian ὅρος διαιρετικός and its Arabic interpretation (II.); finally we shall draw some connecting lines between Llull’s definitions, modem theories of definition themselves and Russell’s and Quine’s theory of descriptions (III.).

Aguirre Sala, Jorge Francisco

Wyllie, Guilherrne

The theory of the temporal inferences improved by William of Ockham is one of the most important innovations of the medieval logic, since it establishes the first detailed exposition about the subject. Essentially, Ockham asserts that such inferences would be characterized by the time, which is crucial in establishing its validity, and in this context it has to be emphasized not only a dicussion about the absolute and factual consequences but also the temporal syllogistic.

The conception of music elaborated by Saint Augustine in his dialogue De Musica reflects the untiring investigation about God, developing the music in a perfect congruency with the love devoted to Him and establishing a harmonious entail between the sensible beauty and the Supreme Beauty. To investigate his musical aesthetical conception, it was adopted as main reference, over there the referred dialogue, the work Traité de la musique selon l’esprit de Saint Augustin, by Henri Davenson.

Gontrão: rei, sacerdote, santo

Freitas, Edmar Checon de

The work analyzes the characterization of king Guntram (561-592) in the Gregory’s of Tours (c.538-594) Libri Historiarum, in which the goodness, mercy and justice of the king become it deserving of the identification as sacerdos Domini and they confer to it thaumaturgic powers. The implications of this image for the establishment of the notion of sacerdotal royalty in the Merovingian Gad are argued still.
